Purpose: Meet the band, find out show dates and listen to their music.
Focus: Use research to drive design and UX principles to accurately communicate the band’s brand.
Role: Lead UX Designer
Tools: AdobeXD, Adobe Illustrator, SurveyMonkey
The Problem
Create a band website that communicates updates, showcases new music and builds the band’s identity.
Why: To book more gigs, play live at new venues and grow their fan base.
Who: Venue managers, fans, new listeners, locals and music lovers
When & Where: Anytime, anywhere, at work, on-the-go
What: Website for desktop or mobile view
Research: Competitor
I asked the band, “Which artists inspire you the most and who do you sound most like?” The White Stripes and The Black Keys are two bands that match their musical style. I looked at these popular band websites to conduct a quick SWOT analysis, see what content they include and see how they communicate their message.
Research: User
To determine what users wanted to see on their website, I conducted a survey and posted it on Facebook. 13 total participated. The survey results showed that most wanted to see show times, new music releases and videos.
To understand the demographics of their current fans, I used a sample group from their Facebook followers and fans who have attended their previous live shows.
Example of Facebook sample group (55 total):
Ages 20-30: 21 / Ages 30-40: 23
Married: 37 v. Single: 18
Female: 36 v. Male: 19
out of state: 31 v. local = 24
Empathize with the User
Creating personas and user stories helps me analyze and organize my research. It also helps me to get into the mind of the user, understand their potential frustrations and brainstorm from different perspectives. Ultimately, it allows the next phase to be productive and creative.
